As somebody who is a great deal more familiar with the canal than you are, all I can say is that your entire post is full of bullshit.
The canal, as you noted, is historically significant. There are organizations that work hard to keep the canal relevant, and open. Perhaps if you would like to understand better what is going on, you can contact the Dismal Swamp welcome center and speak to Sarah, the Director there. She will educate you so that you don’t put this kind of crap out anymore.
Hey Bill, looks like we'll be chasing you south this year. We're in New Bern as I write this and will be heading south starting on Thanksgiving (weather permitting).
You anchoring in the actual creek or staying at Taylor Creek Marina? We stayed at the marina on the way up here last year. Awesome place but definitely not on the beaten path.
Awesome! We'll see you there. We're leaving here on Thanksgiving Thursday and coming to the Moorhead City area to stay overnight before heading out. We'd like to stop overnight Thursday and head out on Friday or Saturday to Charleston. Our MMSI is 367300070 in case you happen to spot us.
We'd love to at least grab a drink, meal, or just say hello.
I see that your thin skin and pettiness caused you to block me. I was going to apologize for my misspellings and poor grammar in my reply. I am currently sailing and talking into my phone. Fair winds!
The great dismal swamp canal and politics have been handed and glove since the beginning. It has opened and closed or changed hands from government to private several times. If you look at the proposed cuts to the federal budget near the top of the list are funding for“alternate “roots when the intercoastal waterway is 10 miles away. Maybe North Carolina and Virginia will step up and find it themselves, but it’s highly unlikely. When the cuts are made, followed by the next big storm to hit Lake Drummond, I would guess it would be years and years for this canal to open. If ever. The story of this canal is all about politics.

Just out of curiousity what, specifically, are you calling bullshit on?

I’m in Elizabeth City now. Trying for Beaufort, NC on Wednesday. Maybe Tuesday late. I’ll stay in Taylor Creek until the day after Thanksgiving.

I'll anchor in Taylor Creek again across from the dinghy dock. My MMSI is 368236080 if you are coming that way.

Why do you have to bring politics into my sailing reading?!

I don’t think it’s thin skin and pettiness, I read you for sailing not politics. Major disappointment, but that’s the boomer coming out.
Boomers gonna boom
