It should be finished in a few minutes.

Almost daily, April and I discuss books and writing in one form or another. It seems natural when one of you spent nearly three decades in journalism and the other more years than that in the front of a classroom.

We’ve been reading Margarita Cat by fellow sailor Bruce Van Sant aloud to each other, alternating at each short story. We would have finished long ago, but we wait until we both are ready to read it. I highly concur with Peter Swanson’s recommendation of the book on his Loose Canon website. If you are a sailor, buy this book.

The day before yesterday, April had Sun Tzu’s The Art Of War open on the Kindle. I suggested it, so I’m not worried. I’ve read it. I’ll know what’s coming.

A copy of Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin, dog-eared on page 276, is on the bookshelf. I assume that April would recommend it, even with half of the book left. Proof would be on a video from a recent Sunday morning with the ARETHA record blasting through the Sonos as April read the book and danced in the living room like no one else was home.

I’m slowly reading The Overstory: A Novel for a second time. I’m trying to remember the characters’ names and why they are associated with a specific tree. I highly recommend this book. Like I said, I am reading it twice.

We devour newspapers on the weekends and blog blurbs during the week.

April writes. She encourages me to write, so I try.

We have a shared Apple Note with new words we discover during the week and want to remember to look up. I can usually get close to guessing the meanings, and she is almost always correct on the root origins, but we fact-check each other.

I could go on and on, but as you can tell, we’re into words. I’ve already written many here, so I’ll get to the point of this post.

I’ve been fascinated with AI for a few years. I’ve downloaded all the free apps and paid a few for AI writing and image creation tools.

As an English teacher, April talks about using or at least controlling AI for student writing assignments.

This morning, I got suckered in by an advertisement (on Instagram) for a SAAS program that would automatically write a book for you. It tied into our frequent discussions on the topic.

So, as I mentioned above, I wrote a book today, or more accurately, AI wrote it.

I’ve run the text through Grammarly (which uses AI to check for proper grammar in text) and then pasted the automatically generated text below.

I have not read it, but as Grammarly fixed the grammar, it felt like I was playing Whac-A-Mole as I blindly clicked to accept over 400 changes and nine suspected plagiarized sections. During that long AI editing process, I saw words and phrases that were not in my everyday lexicon.
